HBO Max cancellation guide

How to Cancel HBO Max

Where you cancel HBO Max depends on who bills you. This guide starts with how to find that out.

Quick answer

  • HBO Max states that the subscription automatically renews until you cancel it.
  • Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel the subscription.
  • Cancel before your next billing date to avoid further charges.

Step 1: Find who bills you

The official article makes this the first step, because the cancellation steps vary depending on who bills you.

  • Web: go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in if needed.
  • Phone, tablet, or computer: in HBO Max, choose your profile and then Subscription.
  • TV device: in HBO Max, choose the Settings icon and then Subscription.
  • The biller appears at the top of the screen. HBO Max also suggests checking bank statements or asking your internet, mobile, or TV provider.

Step 2: Cancel a WarnerMedia-billed subscription

These steps cover a subscription billed by HBO Max itself (WarnerMedia). Screens can change.

  1. Open the subscription page

Go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in if needed.

View HBO Max's official cancellation article (opens an external site)

  2. Choose Cancel Your Subscription

If there is no cancel option, HBO Max says to note the biller shown at the top of the screen and follow that company's process instead.

  3. Confirm and note your expiration date

Confirm the cancellation and take note of the expiration date. You can stream until the subscription expires at the end of your billing period.

Extra Member Add-On

  • If you have the Extra Member Add-On, it is cancelled when your base plan expires.
  • HBO Max states that if there is remaining time on the add-on, you get a prorated refund for the remaining days.

Third-party billing

HBO Max documents the steps per biller. The app stores and platforms named in the official article are Amazon Appstore, Apple, Google Play, Roku, Samsung TV, and Xumo. The internet, mobile, and TV providers named are AT&T, Cox, DIRECTV, DoorDash, Hulu, Optimum, Prime Video Channels, Sling TV, Spectrum, Verizon, Xfinity, YouTube TV, and YouTube Primetime Channels.

Apple
On iPhone or iPad open Settings, choose your name, choose Subscriptions, select HBO Max, then Cancel Subscription.
Google Play
In the Play Store app choose your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, select HBO Max, then Cancel subscription.
Amazon Appstore
Sign in at Amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions, find HBO Max under Your Subscriptions, and turn off auto-renewal.
Roku
Sign in at my.roku.com/subscriptions, find HBO Max in Active Subscriptions, choose Manage subscription, then turn off auto-renew and confirm.
  • In each case HBO Max states you should receive a confirmation email from that company and can stream until the subscription expires at the end of the billing period.
  • For a provider not listed, HBO Max directs you to sign in to that provider's website or contact them.

After you cancel

  • Note the expiration date shown when you confirmed the cancellation.
  • Check that the confirmation email from your biller has arrived.
  • HBO Max provides a separate article for charges that appear after cancelling.
