LA Fitness cancellation guide

How to Cancel an LA Fitness Membership

LA Fitness says month-to-month memberships can be cancelled at any time — but the postmark date and any initial term change the outcome.

Quick answer

  • LA Fitness states that most club memberships are month-to-month and may be cancelled at any time.
  • Three routes are documented: mailing written notice to the address LA Fitness publishes, visiting a club front desk, or using your online account.
  • Depending on your state of enrolment, LA Fitness says you may also be able to cancel by email — check your agreement.
  • A mailed cancellation form postmarked at least five business days before the next billing date should result in no further billings.

Before you cancel

  • Check whether your agreement has an initial term of three months or more — cancelling inside it triggers a termination fee.
  • Find your next billing date and count back five business days. The rule is based on the postmark, not on delivery.
  • Check for prepaid time — LA Fitness states you may still use the club for any pre-paid time after cancelling.
  • If you are only taking a break, LA Fitness offers freezing the membership as a documented alternative.

The three documented routes

These follow LA Fitness's own published terms. Anything set out differently in your agreement takes precedence.

  1. Cancel in your online account

Sign in to your member account and cancel there. This is one of the three routes LA Fitness documents.

View LA Fitness's official membership page (opens an external site)

  2. Cancel in person at a club

Go to a club and ask at the front desk.

  3. Mail written notice of cancellation

Send written notice to the P.O. box LA Fitness publishes. It recommends registered or certified mail and keeping a record for your files.

The five-business-day postmark rule

If the notice is postmarked within five business days of the next billing date you may be billed once more; LA Fitness states it will refund that additional billing.

Initial term and prepaid time

Outside the initial term
Once an initial term of three months or more has ended, LA Fitness states you may cancel at any time using the routes above.
Still inside the initial term
If you are still within the initial term, LA Fitness states your cancellation becomes effective when that term ends.
Ending before the initial term is over
To end the membership before the initial term is over, a termination fee applies. No amount is published, so it has to come from your agreement or your club.
Prepaid time
If you prepaid your last month's dues at enrolment, that prepaid time is applied to the month following your final recurring payment, and the membership expires at the end of it.

For cancelling a paid-in-full agreement, LA Fitness directs you to your local club or its contact page. Terms can vary by region and by how you paid.

After you cancel

  • Check your statement after the next billing date — a postmark inside five business days can produce one more charge.
  • If that extra charge appears, LA Fitness states it will be refunded — raise it with your record in hand.
  • If you have prepaid time left, confirm the date the membership actually expires.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel by email?

LA Fitness states this may be available depending on your state of enrolment. It is not a universal route, so check your own agreement.

Can I freeze instead of cancelling?

Yes. LA Fitness presents freezing as an alternative when you will be away for more than 30 days and your dues exceed the freeze fee. It states weekly dues members may not suspend their memberships.

How early do I have to mail the cancellation?

It must be postmarked at least five business days before your next billing date. The rule is stated against the postmark, not the delivery date.
