ChatGPT cancellation guide
How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus
How to end a ChatGPT subscription from settings, and where to cancel when a mobile app store handles the billing.
Quick answer
- If you signed up on the web, cancel from the Billing screen in ChatGPT settings.
- The cancellation takes effect the day after your next billing date, and you can keep using the service until then.
- To avoid being charged for the next billing period, cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
Before you cancel
Where and how you cancel depends on how you signed up and which plan you are on.
- First check whether you subscribed on the web at chatgpt.com, through the App Store in the iOS app, or through Google in the Android app.
- This guide covers self-service personal subscriptions. OpenAI's documentation states that Enterprise and Edu plans are handled separately.
- A Business subscription is cancelled from the Billing tab in workspace settings, not from personal settings.
- OpenAI states that subscription fees are non-refundable, so factor in the 24-hour rule if you are cancelling close to a billing date.
Step-by-step cancellation
These steps apply to a personal subscription started on chatgpt.com. On-screen labels can change.

Where you cancel depends on how you subscribed
- A subscription bought through the App Store is managed by Apple and has to be cancelled in the subscription settings on your iOS device.
- A subscription created through Google is cancelled in the Play Store app or on the Google Play website, signed in with the same Google account you used to subscribe.
- Google Play states that uninstalling an app does not cancel the subscription.
Billing and when access ends
When the cancellation applies and how refunds are handled are both stated in the official documentation.
- When the cancellation applies
- The cancellation becomes effective the day after your next billing date, so you can keep using the service until then.
- The 24-hour rule
- To avoid being charged for the next billing period, cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
- Refunds
- OpenAI states that subscription fees are non-refundable. Any refund request process is covered in OpenAI's separate refund article.
- Deleting your account
- Deleting a ChatGPT account cancels the subscription automatically and stops further billing. Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
After you cancel
Use this checklist to confirm the cancellation registered and that no further charges appear.
- Check the subscription status and end date on the Billing screen in settings.
- Review your card or payment statement after the next billing date has passed.
- If the App Store or Google Play billed you, confirm the cancellation in that store's subscription list too.
- Make sure a separate subscription is not still active on the other platform.
- If you can no longer access the account's email address and cannot cancel, contact OpenAI support.
